Appliance repair that you can do without professional supervision

In a household, there is almost always something that needs repairing or improving or cleaning and if you call someone for every little thing, your savings account won’t hold on for long. Instead of running to the phone, you should take a quick look and see if there is something you can do. There are a few techniques that can save you a lot of time and money when it comes to appliance repair.

When something doesn’t work as it should or simply won’t start there are a few things you should check for:

If it’s an electric appliance

You should check for a reset button. Many of today’s electronic appliances are equipped with safety circuits that trip in case of an overload. The reset button resets everything in place.

If it’s something you cook on

You should check for pieces of food or layers that may cover or block the main mechanism. Usually this happens with burners on stoves after a hard day of cooking.

If it’s a problem with your lights

Go to the main panel and check for a tripped circuit breaker. These are easy to put in place once spotted and everything comes back to normal.

Setting an electronic device

This can also be something to fight with. You’d think with that much technology around setting the oven timer and cooking program would be a piece of cake. Well sometimes it’s not that simple and the oven just won’t start. You can’t let your family stay hungry until the handyman comes over so you have to take care of the problem.

The solution is simple: look for the off button (or sometimes clear button), press it and restart the whole thing after 1 minute. All the settings should be cleared and now the oven should run smoothly.

The washer is noisier than ever

Every washer is noisy especially during the spin cycle but yours seems to want to drive you mad. Usually the problem is in the legs. Check if all its legs are solid on the ground. If not, simply readjust the front legs and then tilt it a bit forward to readjust the rear legs too.

Appliance repair doesn’t seem so impossible now, does it? It would be a shame to call a handyman from who knows where so he can push a button. He will bill you for this and you will feel frustrated for not trying to solve this by yourself.
